19 Attic Bedroom Ideas

I’ve been working on a little bedroom makeover. This is the attic bedroom in my house. It’s a nice size room with a private bath.

My daughter and her husband lived here for a couple years while they saved up to buy a house.

This is what it looked like when they were here. I had decorated it for them.

1. Add a dormer window

Adding a dormer window to your attic bedroom will give you more headroom and allow you to add more furniture and accessories.

It will also allow you to add more natural light into the space, which is always a good idea.

Here, a dormer window has been added to the bedroom space in a loft conversion.

This has allowed the bed to be positioned in the middle of the room, rather than pushed up against the wall, making it feel more spacious.

2. Add a skylight

One of the biggest challenges of designing an attic bedroom is dealing with the lack of windows. If you can, consider adding a skylight to your attic space.

This will provide your bedroom with natural light and give you an opportunity to stargaze from your bed.

3. Use the space under the eaves

If you are planning an attic conversion, then consider whether you want to keep the eaves.

Here, a low, built-in unit has been added, and a wall-mounted shelf used to create a desk area.

The low-level unit is perfect for this child’s bedroom, and it can be used for storage or to create a cozy reading nook.

4. Build a bed into the eaves

If you have a larger attic space, then you might be able to build a bed into the eaves. This is a great way to maximize space and create a cozy sleeping area.

The bed in this attic bedroom is built into a nook, which creates a cozy sleeping area that feels separate from the rest of the space.

The built-in shelves are a great way to add extra storage and display space.

5. Use the eaves for storage

Attic spaces are often filled with awkward nooks and crannies, but these can be turned into a real positive in a bedroom.

Use the space under the eaves for storage and build in some custom shelving.

You could go for a more traditional look with some built-in cupboards or, if you are on a budget, just add in some wall-mounted shelves.

Attic bedrooms can be on the small side, so making the most of every inch of space is key.

6. Make a feature of a sloping ceiling

This beautiful bedroom has been designed to make the most of the sloping ceiling.

The elegant patterned wallpaper has been used to create a feature wall that draws the eye up and accentuates the height of the room.

The wallpaper has been balanced with a simple color scheme,

and the rest of the room has been kept relatively uncluttered, with just a few personal touches to make it feel cozy.

7. Use a wall of a sloping ceiling for built-in storage

When it comes to attic bedroom storage ideas, built-in storage is going to be your best friend.

Sloping ceilings can be tricky to work with, but built-in storage can be designed to fit the space perfectly.

You can see here how the whole wall has been used for storage, and the built-in wardrobes have been designed around the beams and the sloping ceiling.

The owners have also used the space on the floor for a lovely window seat, which is a great way to make use of awkward spaces in an attic room.

8. Make a feature of a chimney breast

If your attic room has a chimney breast, make the most of it by painting it in a contrasting color to the rest of the room.

This will create a focal point and add interest to the space.

We love the combination of dark blue and gold in this bedroom.

The pale blue walls and white ceiling help to keep the room feeling light and spacious, while the blue chimney breast adds a cozy, cocooning feel.

Gold is a great accent color for blue, and the gold bedding and wall sconces look lovely in this space.

9. Paint the ceiling

If you have a slanted ceiling in your attic bedroom, consider painting it a color that will make the space feel more open.

In this bedroom, the ceiling was painted a light shade of blue.

This helps to make the ceiling feel higher than it actually is, and it also adds a pop of color to the room.

10. Add a mezzanine

If you have a high enough attic, consider adding a mezzanine level.

This can be a great way to create a separate sleeping area and living area, especially in a studio apartment-style attic.

This idea is also great for adding an en suite bathroom to your attic,

as you can keep the bedroom separate from the bathroom and avoid using walls to divide the space.

Conclusion

Converting your attic into a bedroom is a great way to increase the living space in your home. You’ll need to hire a professional to help you with the process, but the end result will be a cozy bedroom that offers privacy and peace.
