22 Coat Closet Organization Ideas
It’s that time of year where we all need to start thinking about coat closet organization.
It’s the perfect time to declutter and get the closets ready for the cooler weather.
There are a few things you can do to make the process easier. I’m also sharing some tips on how to keep it organized.
1. Start with a clean slate
Remove everything from the closet and give it a good cleaning.
This is also a good time to assess whether or not you need to paint the walls or add a fresh coat of paint.
I added a coat of white paint to our coat closet and it made a world of difference.
2. Sort and purge
As with any organizing project, the first step is to take everything out of the closet. Then, sort items into categories.
Coats, jackets, and other outerwear should be grouped together.
If you have a lot of coats, you might want to further divide them by season.
Then, sort by type.
For example, group all your raincoats together, all your puffer coats together, and all your wool coats together.
Once you’ve sorted your coats, move on to other categories.
Hats, gloves, and scarves should be grouped together.
If you have kids, you might want to sort these items by child, especially if they have a lot of hats and gloves.
If you have a lot of hats and scarves, you might want to sort them by season.
For example, put all your winter hats and scarves in one pile and all your summer hats and scarves in another pile.
After you’ve sorted your hats, gloves, and scarves, move on to other categories, such as umbrellas and other rain gear.
Once you’ve sorted everything, it’s time to purge.
Go through each category and get rid of anything that is damaged, worn out, or no longer needed.
If you have a lot of coats, you might want to consider donating some of them.
There are many organizations that accept coat donations, such as One Warm Coat.
If you have kids, you might want to consider donating any items they’ve outgrown.
3. Group like with like
This is a key step in all the organizing projects I take on.
It’s so easy to just throw things in a closet and forget about them, but if you take the time to group like items with like items, it will make your life so much easier.
You can see here that I grouped all the hats together, all the scarves together, and all the gloves together.
I even went a step further and grouped the hats by type and color, and the scarves by color.
4. Measure your closet and get the right organizational tools
Once you’ve cleared out your closet, it’s time to measure the space.
This is a crucial step, as it will help you determine which organizational tools will work best for your closet.
For example, if you have a smaller closet, you may want to consider using over-the-door hooks or a hanging closet organizer to make the most of your space.
If you have a larger closet, you may want to consider using a freestanding coat rack or a wall-mounted shelf.
Once you know the dimensions of your closet, you can start shopping for the right organizational tools for your space.
Be sure to measure the tools you’re considering to make sure they will fit in your closet.
5. Create a zone for everything
In a perfect world, everything in the coat closet would have a designated space. This is where bins and baskets come in handy.
If you have a lot of stuff to store, I recommend using a bin for each category.
For example, you could use a bin for hats, gloves, and scarves. If you have a lot of hats, you could use a bin for each family member.
If you don’t have a lot of stuff to store, you could use one bin for all of the hats and another bin for all of the gloves.
6. Put it all back
Now that you have a plan for the items you are keeping, it’s time to put them back in the closet.
We have a few categories of items to consider when deciding where to put them back.
• Create a zone for each family member.
• Keep the most used items at eye level.
• Use the floor for shoes and boots.
• Use the top of the closet for off-season items.
7. Keep up with the maintenance
The last step to keeping your coat closet organized is making sure you keep up with it.
This means putting things back where they go right away and making time to declutter and reorganize the space every few months.
I like to set a reminder on my phone to go off every 3 months to remind me to declutter and reorganize my coat closet.
This takes about 20 minutes and is a great way to make sure the space doesn’t get out of control.
8. Add a little love
I like to think of these little touches as the icing on the cake. They’re not necessary, but they sure do make things pretty!
I like to add a few items that make me smile, like a cute rug or a piece of art.
This really is the last step, so take your time and find a few things that really make you happy.
I promise it will make you want to keep things organized!
9. Get the kids involved
If you have kids, get them involved in the process. Have them help you sort through their own items and decide what to keep, donate, or throw away.
You can also get them involved in the fun part – picking out baskets and bins, and adding their own personal touches to the space.
Kids are more likely to keep the area organized if they’ve had a say in how it looks and functions.
